Propane Line Replacement

BPSI Construction and Maintenance replaced the propane line between the propane tank and the emergency backup generator at Menefee Lakes Fire Station #76. 

This fire station was an original Cal Fire Facility that Menifee took over when they incorporated as a city.  During the annual test for the emergency backup generator it was discovered that there were leaks in the propane line.  A rigid underground line typically last 15 years so it was due for this one to be replaced.

BPSI recommended polyethylene pipe over galvanized or copper pipe to save the City of Menifee money and because of many advantages of using polyethene pipe.  This pipe can be direct buried for ease of installation, this 100-foot run could be installed without joints and has it a service life of 50 to 100 years.

BPSI saw cut the concrete next to the generator and removed a 2-foot strip to get access to the pipe. A trench was excavated to make a path for the new gas line.  New 2" polyethylene pipe was installed along with a trace wire.  New risers were installed and connected to the generator and to the propane tank.

After the system was tested and all was working well the trench was filled and compacted and concrete was poured to replace the slab next to the generator.

In addition to its outstanding physical characteristics, HDPE is recognized for its minimal impact on the environment:

  • In trenchless installations, the physical characteristics of HDPE pipe enables you to use a smaller pipe, resulting in less ground disruption than when installing other fusible products.
  • HDPE pipe joined with heat fusion provides leak free connections.
  • HDPE does not emit potentially hazardous levels of toxins into the air during production, during fusion or into the ground or water during use.
  • HDPE pipe can be recycled back into non-pressure piping applications.
